The Gate of the Sanctuary. The high priest of
priestess stands in the door of the temple, its gatekeeper. In
contrast to the magus, who is free in his understanding of God’s
love and purity, the priestess’s view is veiled. Her head is crowned
with, not the sun, but the moon. The light of the moon is only a
reflection, a shadow. It has no light of its own. The moon is
an apt symbol of the sanctuary and those who govern it. Here is a symbol for all
religious systems for all times. It is an inevitable outworking of
history that the pope or high priest gets lost in religious systems
and structures and rules by keeping subjects in the shadows of rules
and liturgy, which are never the essence of true religion.
The essence of true religion, true worship
of the Living God, can never be based on symbol and shadow, the
things of the moon. It must be based on truth and reality,
like the shining strength of the sun. |
