14. The Two Urns

Divine alchemy...

14. The Two Urns. Here is a mighty angel, clothed with the glory of God (symbolized by the sun as a crown, and the tongue of fire on the head). This angel is pouring some elixir from a gold vessel to a silver. This is a reminder that God is the ultimate alchemist, that His power extends to all of nature.

While His followers cannot conjure up alchemical potions by their own will, they can be assured that the Master Chemist can choose to work supernaturally on their behalf.

When the first Christian disciples were anointed on the Day of Pentecost, they were given the gift of tongues. Fire jumped from their heads, but they were not burned. The power they were given worked mightily for them. The laws of nature were suspended in that men of other languages understood what they were saying.

They saw something like flames of fire that were separated and stood over each person there. {4} They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages by the power the Holy Spirit was giving them. {5} There were some religious Jews staying in Jerusalem who were from every country in the world. {6} When they heard this noise, a crowd came together. They were all surprised, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. {7} They were completely amazed at this. They said, "Look! Aren't all these people that we hear speaking from Galilee? {8} Then how is it possible that we each hear them in our own languages? We are from different places: {9} Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, {10} Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the areas of Libya near Cyrene, Rome {11} (both Jews and those who had become Jews), Crete, and Arabia. But we hear them telling in our own languages about the great things God has done!" {12} They were all amazed and confused, asking each other, "What does this mean?" (Acts 2:3-12)

Philip was transported in a moment a great distance that he might perform gospel service:

When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away... {40} (and he) appeared in a city called Azotus and preached the Good News in all the towns on the way from Azotus to Caesarea. (Acts 8:39-40)

The angel who is God's servant, showing this divine alchemy, has wings on her feet, like the messenger god Mercury. God is especially likely to act supernaturally for His servants when they are on the battlefield for him and in need of swift and special intervention.

God’s power works on behalf of those who work for him. This power is more powerful than the antagonistic power which the Great Enemy of God and the enemy of all good can wield...

Bob Dylan sings, "You know sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace."
